Company

Founded in 1986 by Mr. Kuo Pao Kun, The Theatre
Practice is Singapore’s first bilingual
theatre company, occupying a unique position in
Singapore's cultural life. While its bilingual
sensitivity reflects the newly emerging contemporary
culture in Southeast Asia, its eclectic approach
to theatre-making expresses the intense struggle
between tradition and modernity as it continually
reinforces the assertion of local identity as
well as provides ready access to influences of
the global culture. This is made possible through
collaborations with eminent artists from abroad
and festival organisers in bringing its repertoire
to the international audiences.
Besides Chinese and English productions, The
Theatre Practice has a subsidiary: Established
in 1994, the Student Theatre Education Program
(STEP) led by Assistant Artistic Director, May
Wong, continues its theatre outreach to schools.
"That our theatre should aspire
to objectively critique life, respectfully entertain
the audience, and forever explore new, uncharted
territories. Based on these very basic consensus,
we debate among ourselves vigorously as we support
each other loyally." Mr. Kuo Pao
Kun wrote in early 2002. In September the same
year, with Mr. Kuo’s passing, The Theatre
Practice’s long and winding road faces another
new beginning. Under the leadership of the younger
generation that includes Kuo Jian Hong, Wu Xi
and Tang Chia-Yu, The Theatre Practice is preparing
to move into a new phase of its artistic journey.
The young Artistic Team cannot replace the void
left by Kuo Pao Kun’s departure, but it
will strive to follow in his footsteps. The Theatre
Practice will uphold its artistic mission of multicultural
exploration and bilingual interpretations of classics.
The company aims to strengthen its existing audience
base and to nurture a new generation of theatre-goers
by seeking a balance between popular and experimental
works. The Theatre Practice also aims to become
a fully professional theatre company that is recognised
by its unique artistic character and healthy operational
structure.
