Introduction

The Theatre Practice, Singapore’s first bilingual theatre company, has planted its feet firmly in Singapore's cultural life. In this multi-racial environment, its sensitivity to social differences has captured the essence of an emerging culture in Southeast Asia – harmony amidst diversity.

Founded in 1986 by Mr. Kuo Pao Kun, The Theatre Practice’s approach to theatre-making reflects the intense struggle between tradition and modernity. While it provides access to global influences through international collaborations, The Theatre Practice remains true to its assertion of local identity.

Besides producing English and Mandarin productions, The Theatre Practice also incorporates an arts education subsidiary. Established in 1994, the Student Theatre Exposure Programme (STEP), led by Assistant Artistic Director, May Wong, conducts theatre outreach and arts awareness programmes in local schools.

In September 2002, with Mr. Kuo’s passing, The Theatre Practice’s artistic journey continues to be forged under the leadership of co-Artistic Directors- Kuo Jian Hong and Wu Xi.
